The Critical Language Scholarship Program

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is a fully-funded overseas language and cultural immersion program for American undergraduate and graduate students. Program costs are fully covered for all participants, including:

  • Intensive overseas group-based language courses (20+ hours per week)
  • Room and board, often with a host family
  • A full cultural program
  • Host community language partners
  • S. academic credit
  • Domestic and international airfare
  • Participants receive a small stipend to cover incidental expenses and meals not provided by the program.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program offers grants for U.S. citizen undergraduate students of limited financial means to pursue academic studies or credit-bearing, career-oriented internships abroad. There are opportunities within the Gilman award program:

  • The Gilman Scholarship provides up to $5,000 for students
  • Applicants who are studying a critical need language in a country or location in which the language is predominantly spoken may apply for a supplemental award of up to an additional $3,000
  • Applicants who are conducting STEM-related research as part of their study abroad or international internship program can apply for a supplemental award of up to $1,000.
  • The Gilman-McCain Scholarship provides awards of $5,000 for child and spousal dependents of active or activated United States military personnel during the time of application

US-UK Fulbright Summer Institutes

The US-UK Fulbright Summer Institute offers programs for US undergraduates (aged over 18), with at least two years of undergraduate study left to complete, to participate in a three, four, five or six week academic and cultural summer program in the UK. Participants will get the opportunity to experience an exciting academic program at a highly regarded UK University, explore the culture, heritage and history of the UK. The Summer Institutes will cover the majority of participant cost, including:

  • Round-trip airfare from the US to the UK
  • Tuition and fees at the host university/institution
  • Accommodation and meals
  • In some cases, a small daily allowance

David L. Boren Scholarship

Boren Scholarships, an initiative of the National Security Education Program, provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests, and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded. Boren Scholars represent a vital pool of highly motivated individuals who wish to work in the federal national security arena. In exchange for funding, Boren Scholars commit to working in the federal government for at least one year after graduation.

Maximum awards are determined by duration abroad:

  • $25,000 for 25-52 weeks (preferred)
  • $12,500 for 12-24 weeks
  • $8,000 for 8-11 weeks (STEM majors only)

Barry Goldwater Scholarship

The Barry Goldwater Scholarship Program, one of the oldest and most prestigious national scholarships in the natural sciences, engineering, and mathematics in the United States, seeks to identify, encourage, and financially support college sophomores and juniors who show exceptional promise of becoming this Nation’s next generation of research leaders in these fields. Applicants must be a US citizen intending to pursue a research career in a natural science, mathematics or engineering. Funding is:

  • Up to a maximum of $7,500 per full academic year.
  • Scholars who receive the award as sophomores can expect to receive support for a maximum of two years (4 semesters) or until graduation, if sooner.
  • Scholars who receive the award as juniors can expect to receive support for a maximum of one year (2 semesters) or until graduation, if sooner.

TCU may only nominate four traditional students, 1 transfer student, and 1 veteran. Students interested in this award must work through the TCU process.

 Charles B. Rangel Summer Enrichment Program

The Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Summer Enrichment Program is a six-week summer program designed to provide undergraduate students with a deeper appreciation of current issues and trends in international affairs, a greater understanding of career opportunities in international affairs, and the enhanced knowledge and skills to pursue such careers. Students live at Howard University, attend classes, and participate in a variety of programs with foreign affairs professionals at Howard and at diverse locations around Washington, DC. The Program covers the costs for:

  • Tuition
  • Travel
  • Housing
  • Two meals per day
  • Stipend of $3,200

Harry S. Truman Scholarship

The Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation awards merit-based scholarships to future "change agents" who aspire to leadership positions in federal, state, or local governments or in the not-for-profit and education sectors where they can influence public policies and change public programs. Students must be A US citizen or US national, in their junior year, have an extensive record of public and community service, outstanding leadership potential and communication skills, and a commitment to a career in government or elsewhere in the public sector. Scholars:

  • Receive up to $30,000 for graduate or professional school
  • Participate in leadership development activities
  • Have special opportunities for internships and employment with the federal government.

TCU may only nominate four traditional students and three transfer students. Students interested in this award must work through the TCU process.

Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Program

The Fulbright U.S. Teaching Assistant Program places Fulbrighters in classrooms abroad to provide assistance to the local English teachers. ETAs help teach English language while serving as cultural ambassadors for the U.S. Fulbright U.S. Student alumni populate a range of professions and include ambassadors, members of Congress, judges, heads of corporations, university presidents, journalists, artists, professors, and teachers. Benefits include:

  • Round-trip travel
  • A stipend broadly based on the cost of living in the host country
  • Accident & sickness health benefits
  • 12 months of non-competitive eligibility (NCE) hiring status within the federal government upon return

Fulbright Study/Research Grant

The Fulbright U.S. Study/Research Program offers opportunities for students and young professionals to undertake international graduate study and advanced research worldwide. The program currently awards approximately 1,900 grants annually in all fields of study, and operates in more than 140 countries worldwide. Fulbright U.S. Benefits include:

  • Round-trip travel
  • A stipend broadly based on the cost of living in the host country
  • Accident & sickness health benefits
  • 12 months of non-competitive eligibility (NCE) hiring status within the federal government upon return

Gates Cambridge Scholarship

The Gates Cambridge Scholarship enables outstanding students from outside the United Kingdom to study at the University of Cambridge. The Trustees award scholarships on the basis of a person's intellectual ability, leadership capacity and desire to use their knowledge to contribute to society throughout the world by providing service to their communities and applying their talents and knowledge to improve the lives of others. Gates Cambridge Scholarships covers:

  • All approved University and College tuition fees
  • A maintenance allowance
  • A discretionary allowance for study-related activities
  • Round-trip travel

James C. Gaither Junior Fellows Program

The James C. Gaither Junior Fellows Program offers approximately 15 one-year fellowships to uniquely qualified graduating seniors and individuals who have graduated during the past academic year. Fellows spend one year (beginning September 1st) in Washington, DC working with Carnegie’s senior scholars on a variety of international affairs issues. Positions are paid, full-time positions for 10-12 months.

  • Anticipated salary is $4,000.00 per month before taxes, paid semi-monthly.
  • A full benefits package is also provided.
  • Junior Fellows also receive relocation support of up to $1,500

Knight-Hennessy Scholars Program

The Knight-Hennessy Scholars program is a graduate-level scholarship aimed at preparing the next generation of global leaders to address the increasingly complex challenges facing our world. Students pursuing graduate education at one of Stanford's 125+ graduate programs receive opportunities for leadership training, mentorship and cohort-based experiential learning. The goal is to empower Knight-Hennessy Scholars to navigate across business, government, academia, and the nonprofit sectors. Each recipient will receive

  • full funding to pursue a graduate.
  • Tuition and associated fees
  • On-campus room and board
  • Books, supplies, instructional materials
  • Health insurance and associated fees
  • Round-trip air travel to Stanford
  • Local transportation
  • Reasonable personal expenses

Marshall Scholarship

Marshall Scholarships finance high achieving Americans who have the potential to excel as scholars, as leaders and as contributors to improved UK-US understanding. Up to forty scholars are selected each year to study either at graduate or occasionally undergraduate level at an UK institution in any field of study. The award covers:

  • University fees
  • Cost of living expenses
  • Fees for book / research fees
  • Round-trip travel

TCU must endorse applicants. Students interested in this award must work through the TCU process.

Mitchell Scholarship

future American leaders to the island of Ireland, while recognizing and fostering intellectual achievement, leadership, and a commitment to community and public service. Up to twelve Mitchell Scholars between the ages of 18 and 30 are chosen annually for one academic year of postgraduate study in any discipline offered by institutions of higher learning in Ireland and Northern Ireland. The Mitchell Scholarship Program provides tuition, accommodation, a stipend for living expenses and travel.

Rhodes Scholarship

The Rhodes Scholarship, the oldest international fellowship, bring outstanding students from many countries around the world to the University of Oxford. Rhodes Scholars are elected for two years of study at the University of Oxford, with the possibility of renewal for a third year. Scholars demonstrate excellence in literary and scholastic attainments (academic excellence), energy to use one's talents to the full (as demonstrated by mastery in areas such as sports, music, debate, dance, theatre, and artistic pursuits, particularly where teamwork is involved), devotion to duty, and moral force of character. The fellowship covers:

  • All educational costs, such as matriculation, tuition, laboratory and certain other fees
  • A maintenance allowance adequate to meet necessary expenses for term-time and vacations.
  • Necessary costs of travel to and from Oxford
  • Upon application, may approve additional grants for research purposes or study-related travel

Thomas R. Pickering Graduate Foreign Affairs Fellowship

The Pickering Program provides graduate fellowships to qualified college seniors and college graduates committed to joining the Foreign Service. The fellowship helps finance two-year graduate programs, provides two summer internships, offers mentoring from a Foreign Service Officer, and provides other professional development activities. The Fellowship is designed to attract outstanding individuals from all ethnic, racial and social backgrounds. Fellows will receive financial support of:

  • up to $37,500 annually for:
  • Tuition costs (first priority)
  • Room and board, books, mandatory fees
  • One round-trip ticket between Fellow's residence and his/her academic institution

The Rangel Graduate Fellowship is a program that aims to attract and prepare outstanding young people for careers in the Foreign Service of the U.S. Department of State. This program encourages the application of members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service, women, and those with financial need. Fellows who successfully complete the program and Foreign Service entry requirements will receive appointments as Foreign Service Officers. Fellows receive financial support of

Udall Undergraduate Scholarship

The Udall Scholarship program identifies future leaders in environmental, Tribal public policy, and healthcare fields. It is highly competitive, with students participating in their schools’ internal competitions before receiving consideration from the Udall Foundation. The scholarship provides:
