Each year, the Fort Worth Business Press presents its Corporate Philanthropy Awards, which honor community-minded companies and individuals who are philanthropic leaders in their organizations and communities. This year’s award recipients included a familiar face – Assistant Dean, J. Vaughn & Evelyne H. Wilson Honors Fellow, Director of Prestigious Scholarships, and Honors Professor Ron Pitcock.

Pitcock was nominated for the award by TCU Honors alumna Melanie Webb (University Honors 2019, double degrees in Strategic Communication & Political Science) for his involvement with the Honors colloquium “Nature of Giving and Philanthropy.”

The course has been a wildly popular offering within the Honors College since it was first offered in 2011 and gives students the unique ability to act as a foundation and direct thousands of dollars in donor gifts to various organizations. Initially, the course began as an experiment between the Once Upon a Time Foundation and TCU Honors. It was the first of its kind anywhere in the U.S., and its success at TCU encouraged the Foundation to take the idea to other universities, including Harvard, Stanford, Virginia and Vanderbilt.

Since its inception, Honors students have been granted the opportunity to direct more than $815,745 in funds. In the spring 2019 semester, the most recent “Giving” cohort divided its funds between Hope Farm, Mercy Clinic, CASA, and Traffick911.

Nature of Giving ceremonyHonors is exceptionally grateful to our generous donors who have helped make this experience possible for our students, including Jeff & Kelly Dillard and Ed Schollmaier. We’d also like to extend our sincerest congratulations to Dr. Pitcock – we look forward to many more years of philanthropic learning!
