Alli Jones is a graduating Honors senior and Chancellor’s Scholar in the School of Music and was recently selected as a participant of the 2019-2020 Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals (CBYX).
The Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals (CBYX) is a fellowship funded by the German Bundestag and U.S. Department of State. It is in its 36th year of providing 75 American and 75 German young professionals between the ages of 18–24 the opportunity to spend one year in each other’s countries studying, interning and living with hosts on a cultural immersion program. The fellowship is open to candidates in all career fields, regardless of any prior experience with the German language or travel to Germany.
Jones has held a special affinity for Germany for many years. She first visited Germany during the summer after graduating from high school and fell in love with the country and its culture. During her time at TCU, she also studied abroad in Vienna, Austria and furthered her study of German, so when she heard about the CBYX program from German professor Dr. Scott Williams, she did not hesitate to apply. “Through CBYX, I get to pursue more opportunities to live and learn abroad and I get to specialize in my field of work, music education. This fellowship was the right fit for me in so many ways!” she enthused.
During her time abroad, Jones hopes to work on her German fluency and to gain an understanding of the education system in Germany. She is specifically interested in learning how music fits into German schooling. “Germany is home to some of the world’s greatest musicians, composers, and conductors. I am curious to see how that reputation trickles down into their public and private schools,” she said.
Jones does not yet know where in Germany she’ll be placed, but enthuses that she would be happy to live and teach anywhere!
On behalf of the John V. Roach Honors College, a big congratulations to Alli! We wish you all the best in your new international adventures.
