Honors Professor Brings Cultural Consciousness to Medical Education

July 17, 2018

Dr. Lynn Hampton

On May 30, Dr. Lynn Hampton, Lecturer in the John V. Roach Honors College, presented a workshop titled “Understanding Unconscious Bias in Health Care: Learning How to Provide More Culturally Competent Patient Care” to the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs at the TCU and UNTHSC School of Medicine and her staff of physician coaches.  In the workshop, the physician coaches discussed the importance of understanding the implications of unconscious bias and the ways in which implicit bias shapes the physician workforce as well as patient care.  In this hands on and interactive discussion, participants engaged in activities and scenarios designed to examine how the prejudices that many of us don’t even know we have impact our medical education, training, careers, and patient care. The workshop provided opportunities for deep reflection, critical awareness, as well as an understanding of the importance of cultural humility for improving the quality of patient care.
